Woodland Hills stuns Mt. Lebanon in 6A playoffs Haley Nelson/Post-Gazette Quentin Nelson, left, of Upper St. Clair leaps to defend the net from Garret Barto of North Hills during a 6A playoff game at North Allegheny high school on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017. North Hills defeated Upper St. Clair High School, 65-50. From local dispatches Saying its been awhile since Woodland Hills won a playoff game would be an understatement. the last time they had that feeling was in 1995 — until Wednesday night, The No. 11 Wolverines (15-8) recaptured that feeling with a 47-43 win against No. 6 Mt. Lebanon (14-9) at Baldwin High Schoo in the Class 6A first round. “It was a big win for our program and the kids,” Woodland Hills head coach Odell Miller said. “The kids knew what was at stake heading into the game. We had a gameplan and it worked. I am so proud of them.” The Wolverines were led by the experienced Deontae Robertson finishing with 20 points and Amante Britt with 14. Robertson hit two free throws with 12 seconds left to push the lead to 46-41 As freshmen, the seniors went through an 0-21 season, but Miller is glad they were able to stick around to witness this. “Our seniors stayed the course, They are a great example for our younger kids.” Other Class 6A games Canon-McMillan 70, North Allegheny 67: The No. 8 Big Macs (18-5) won just their third playoff game in school history and first since 2008 against the No. 9 Tigers (14-9). The win snapped a two-game losing streak against North Allegheny in the playoffs. North Hills 65, Upper St. Clair 50: The No. 5 Indians advanced to their third straight quarterfinal with a win against the No. 12 Panthers at North Allegheny. Like he has all season, Nick Smith led the charge for the Indians with 24 points. The last time these squads played in the playoffs was in 2005, a game won by Upper St. Clair, who was led by Sean Lee. Class 4A games McGuffey 50, Valley 48 (OT): For the No. 8 Highlanders (18-5), picking up their first playoff win in school history will be a memorable one in more ways than one. Down by seven entering the fourth quarter, McGuffey tied up No. 9 Valley (11-12) at Baldwin in the last minute with a shot by Trent Belleville to send the game into overtime. Senior Colin Chapman took over in the extra frame for the Highlanders, scoring five of their seven points. Chapman finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Indiana 69, Elizabeth Forward 68 (OT): Jake Benhart sunk two free throws with 14 seconds left to lift the No. 6 Little Indians past the No. 11 Warriors at Gateway. The Warriors had three chances to win the game at the end but came up short on each attempt. Benhart, who averaged 18.2 points per game in the regular season, finished with a game-high 24 points. Elizabeth Forward’s Tre Mitchell was held in check, scoring 12 points after averaging 20.1 points per game in the regular season. Belle Vernon 57, Deer Lakes 31: For the first time since 2010, the No. 5 Leopards (17-6) advanced in the playoffs by defeating the No. 12 Lancers (12-11) at Gateway. Joey Sabolek led the way with 16 points. South Fayette 63, Freeport 60: The No. 10 Lions (13-10) had four players finish in double figures led by Noah Plack with 15 in their win against the No. 7 Yellow Jackets (15-8) at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic.
