The One Thing You Need For a Memorable (Not MAGICAL) Easter

The surest sign my kids’ Easter won’t be magical? Their mom had to google, “how to make hard-boiled eggs”. For the second year in a row.
Yesterday I posed this question on Facebook, “Is it possible to care about your child’s spiritual formation and not make empty tomb rolls or resurrection eggs? I’m asking for a friend.” It seems I’ve surrounded myself with the best friends. Friends who do not judge my decision to phone it in when it comes to holidays. This is what they told me:
“I sure hope so.”
“Totally not doing anything here either.”
My favorite reply came from my mother-in-law, “I never did any of that stuff and I think my kids understood Easter quite well.” Yes! I can vouch for that. My husband doesn’t seem any worse for the fact that his parents didn’t have darling resurrection eggs.
That’s when a brilliant idea came to me. Since I am surrounded by moms who also are short on resources and the desire to do darling things, I am here to offer my support. I hear you, sisters. You want a powerful object lesson you can do with little to no preparation without spending a dime?
Look no further.
This is so simple, you’re going to kick yourself for not thinking of it already. Here’s what you need. One thing. You need an empty Easter basket. That’s it. I know! It’s too simple, really.
Here’s where the magic happens. Picture this. Your kids emerge from their rooms on Easter morn. They are eager to see their bounty. They come to their Easter baskets only to discover they are empty. You now have their complete attention and can go in for the kill.
“Kids, your Easter basket is empty just like Jesus’ tomb. He is not here. He is risen!” I promise you they will never forget this lesson. Long after their friends have consumed their empty tomb rolls and have forgotten them, your children will be telling the story of how they learned the real meaning of Easter.
**Now, it’s possible the memories won’t be fond ones if the basket stays empty. I just have not figured out a way to make the story work without an empty basket. My flash of inspiration only went so far.**
