An East Texas church is adjusting as derailed train cars sit idle on their property. Three weeks ago, 38 cars of a Union Pacific freight train derailed behind a Malakoff church off of Highway 31.Box and diesel cars lay distorted and stacked in a wooded area behind Hilltop Worship Center in Malakoff.”The train cars are stacked up and the workers are working, there is heavy equipment moving.” Said Youth Pastor Jason Hayes. The railroad track has been repaired and the damaged tracks lay by the road.”It looks a whole lot different than it did a month or so ago,” Hayes said.Church officials said since then, Union Pacific crews have become a permanent fixture on their property.”There are trucks pretty much going all the time,” Hayes said.He said the crews have made a few changes to their landscape.”They built their own road and driveway. So they come in on their side and we come in on ours,” Hayes said.Youth Pastor Jason Hayes said the youth building served as the command post initially, but that was cleared.”We’ve been able to use our facilities just fine except for our Easter egg hunt we have every year.”Union Pacific officials said they have constructed a road to get heavy machinery in and out of the derailment site.”I have not heard a date, they just said it would take awhile,” Hayes said.Officials said the cars won’t be moved until they remove the materials out of each car.Union Pacific Officials said they are still investigating the cause of the derailment. They said once that assessment is made, they plan to make preventative safety adjustments. Copyright 2017 KLTV. All rights reserved.
